What fills my Hours; It seems like I am back in my college days waiting to the last minute to finish writing my bio. I have been retired for about ten years, and am enjoying every minute. We enjoy the shooting sports, canoeing, hunting, and about every other type of outdoor activity. Not so much being a garden “grunt” having to help maintain Sherry’s beautiful daylily and Hosta gardens (thank goodness for Roundup and Prowl). I am Post Commander of our local American Legion Post. Oh yeah, we love watching the many sports, music, and school activities of our Grandkids.
Family/Children; Sherry and I will be married 46 years on June 15th (that is if I can make it that long). We have two children: Hunter (41) who works for the United States Postal Service in Iowa City, and Megan (38) who works in the fraud division for the University of Iowa Community Credit Union. We have seven Grand and Step-Grandkids which keep us busy and staying “young”.
Recent Awards; I received the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America (the highest award a volunteer can receive from the Area Council). Not an award but quite a reward, I was able to attend the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight for Veterans to Washington D.C. What a trip and so well organized. A long but memorable day.
After Central; I transferred from Central after my Junior year to Drake University. After graduation, I taught English at Centerville High School. I was drafted after my first year of teaching and entered the Army with the 17th Cav, 199th Lt Infantry Brigade. Vietnam combat veteran. After completing my tour, I did not have a desire to return to teaching. I spent several years as purchasing agent for a modular home manufacturer. Later, I was part owner of a local lumberyard, and finally worked as sales manager for a manufacturer and wholesale millwork distributor; from which, I retired in 2009.
Phi Delta Tau Memories: Even though I did not graduate from Central, I will always regard Central as my alma mater. The great friendships and fun times surely changed my life (even the social probation for helping introduce a hog to Graham Hall). The Phi Delts were a great part in helping me enjoy my time at Central.
